Safeguarding at P&HSS – ‘our first priority’

In line with Scout’s values, P&HSS recognises its responsibility to safeguard the welfare of all members under 18 and adults at risk by protecting them from neglect and from physical, sexual and emotional abuse. To this end, GEX will annually appoint a Trustee who will take on the role of a Safeguarding Link Trustee.

What is the purpose of a Safeguarding Link Trustee (SLT)?

The SLT is nominated to support GEX in promoting an effective culture of safeguarding across the Scout Group by:

Working alongside the member of the GEX who has responsibility for adults recruitment and training to ensure all safeguarding checks (DBS) and training is up to date in line with the appointments table 2

Logging any safeguarding referrals (anonymously, by category)

Providing safeguarding updates to GEX, as appropriate

Providing an annual safeguarding briefing/update to all adult leaders and volunteers, including trustees, as a helpful reminder of our responsibilities to safeguard the welfare of all members under 18 and adults at risk.

Streamlining access to pertinent information, such as Scouts Safeguarding Policy and the Young Person Referral Form

Promoting the carrying and use of the Yellow Card by all leaders (and volunteers) Ensuring clear communication so that all adults and members know how to report a concern and to who, such as through posters and notice boards

What the SLT is not:

The SLT is not the Scout Group’s safeguarding expert

The SLT does not in any way diminish any leaders or adults responsibility to follow the Code of Practice to safeguard young people and adults at risk

The SLT should not take on any of the steps required of an adult where there is a concern.
