If your child is interested in Scouts, or you’re keen for them to get involved here are some of the basics you need to know…

We operate a first-come first-served waiting list and the waiting time is currently approximately 2 years despite the large number of groups which we operate. Many of our children join as Beavers and stay through Cubs to Scouts. We have relatively few new spaces from Cubs onwards. So…the most likely way to join P&H is to put your child on the waiting list when they are approximately 4 years old. If your child is hoping to join a Scout group within the next 18 months, we recommend that you approach a different group in the area, which you can find by searching on the Scouts website here. We are happy to add children to our waiting list for a place in more than two years but we are unable to guarantee that a place will become available.

Scouting gives children confidence, responsibility and a broader set of friends. Scouting can help develop a child’s social skills and encourage self-sufficiency. Above all it gives children access to activities and opportunities that may have been otherwise unavailable to them

Who can join & when

You don’t have to be Bear Grylls to join the scouts. Anyone can join the Scouts. It is an inclusive and value-based movement open to all young people and adults of all faiths, built and abilities as long as they share our values. Our values are integrity, respect, and cooperation.

The earliest you can join Petersham and Ham Sea Scouts is at the age of four (as a squirrel) and you can stay with us all the way to becoming a Scout Leader!

What does regular commitment look like?

We generally encourage new members to attend a couple of meetings, before committing to see whether they would like to become a sea scout. As Petersham and Ham Sea Scouts is expanding, we are still not able to guarantee that a place will be available for you to join on your preferred day. Once you join, you can enjoy weekly all that scouting has to offer including sea scouting activities such as rowing, kayaking etc and there is no pressure to continue if you find scouting is not for you. However, please note Petersham and Ham Sea Scouts is a very popular group with a long waiting list of children who are keen to join, so usually, members who miss three consecutive meetings for no significant reason are asked to forfeit their place.

P&H Sea Scouts meet weekly during schools term times.

What does it cost?

After attending regularly for a while we will invest you and you then officially become a member of Petersham and Ham Sea Scouts. For this, you will need to have the relevant for your age range uniform, which you can purchase from the online scout shop, some big retailers or through your leader (please note payment need to be made in advance, however, a full refund will be given for all items delivered by P&H which are found faulty). All badges that members work towards are given free of charge.

At Petersham and Ham Sea Scouts, we use the Online Scout Manager to keep all important information about your child (name, contact details, allergies etc) as well as collect your membership fee which is currently £15 monthly.

If you are keen to join us but the membership fee or cost of uniform stands in the way, please don’t be put off. You can contact in confidence our General Scout Leader, Karin Noble and discuss the options available to you.

Moving Up, Across or Leaving P&H Sea Scouts

When the time comes for children to move up to the next age range we usually encourage them to do so with a friend to ensure an easier transition. However, as two spaces may not be available at the time, then children will be given the option to wait until they can move together at a later stage (for information on age ranges please check the section’s pages). There is nothing members need to do for their transition up other than being prepared that the next age range may not be running on the same day they are used to. In order to move across a section then you need to discuss with the leaders who run the groups of the day you are interested to join if there is availability.

Your records, including badges earned etc, will be moved up or across by the leaders.

If you are leaving us then your leader will be able to share with you a printout of all information we hold for you and your records will be destroyed as per GDPR regulations, If you want to know more please get in touch!
